Professor Dr. Jayakaran Mukundan

​Jayakaran Mukundan teaches at the Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia and has taught for 30 years. He started his research on Malaysian textbooks 10 years ago and has been Visiting Fellow at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK, for the past 4 years. He works on projects concerning materials development with that university. He is also a Director on the Extensive Reading Foundation Board.
Dr Jayakaran has taken part in several competitions including the British Invention Show, and International Technological Exhibition (ITEX) at international level, Malaysian Technology Exhibition (MTE) at national level and Pameran Rekacipta Penyelidikan dan Inovasi (PRPI) at university level competitions. In the British Invention Show, he won a gold medal for the composite framework. In total, the result of his research competitions has been 8 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze medals.

Professor Dr. Maya Khemlani David

Professor Dr. Maya Khemlani David (Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University of Malaya) is an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, an Honorary Member of the Foundation of Endangered Languages and a Linguapax Prize Winner. As a sociolinguist, Prof. Dr. David has a special interest in discourse analysis, languages in minority communities, and the role of language in maintaining national unity.
Dr. David is a Member of the Managing Board of The Social Capital Foundation and a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Communication Practices. Maya David is the Linguapax Prize Winner for 2007. Her publications include The Sindhis of Malaysia: A Sociolinguistic Account (2001, London, ASEAN) and co-written Writing a Research Paper (2006, Serdang: UPM). Her co-edited and edited publications are Politeness in Malaysian Family Talk (2008, Serdang: UPM), Language and Human Rights: Focus on Malaysia (2007, Serdang: UPM), Language and the Power of the Media (2006, Frankfurt, Peter Lang), Language Choices and Discourse of Malaysian Families: Case Studies of Families in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2006, Petaling Jaya, Strategic International and Research Development Centre), Teaching of English in Second and Foreign Language Settings: Focus on Malaysia (2004, Frankfurt, Peter Lang) and Developing Reading Skills (2002, Kuala Lumpur: Melta/Sasbadi).
Assistant Professor Furukawa Chikashi

Born in 1953, Furukawa Chikasi graduated from the International Christian University, Tokyo (MA in Comparative Cultures). He worked as a high school teacher in Tokyo, a part-time lecturer in Berkley CA (Japanese literacy and language), and as a researcher-administrator for government-funded in-service teacher education programs again in Tokyo before taking the current job in Taichung, Taiwan, teaching community and cultural studies mainly to Taiwanese university students majoring in Japanese language and culture. He also established a citizens’ NPO, East Asia Popular History Exchange, Taiwan, in 2010 in order to resist ‘hegemonic, national histories’ and promote minorities’ own history constructions and exchanges in East Asia.
Associate Professor Dr. Titima Suthiwan

Dr. Titima Suthiwan holds a BA (Hons) in Thai language and literature (Chulalongkorn University), and a PhD in Linguistics (University of Hawai’i). She was recruited by National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1998 to set up and coordinate Thai language program, which is now the world’s largest of its kind. Prior to joining NUS, she taught and coordinated Thai language program at various universities in the U.S., including University of Hawai'i, University of Washington, Arizona State University, as well as University of Oregon where she also coordinated the Laos and Khmer language programs.
Her publications are in the areas of Southeast Asian historical linguistics, Thai language teaching, poetry, and translation. Her recent books are the Thai language teaching series which include Khian Thai : Thai Writing Workbook (2005), Ann Thai : Basic Thai Reading (2008), Phuut Thai : Basic Conversational Thai (2013), and Rueng Thai : Thai Stories (forth coming). Currently, she is Deputy Director of the Centre for Language Studies at NUS where 12 foreign languages are being offered to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Emerita Professor Margaret Rogers
Centre for Translation Studies, University of Surrey, Guilford
Margaret Rogers was Director of the Centre for Translation Studies in the School of English and Languages at the University of Surrey, UK for 10 years (2003-2013). Her main areas of research have been in specialised translation, particularly from a terminological perspective. She has lectured and published widely on these topics, as well as on aspects of language learning. During the 1990s, she was involved in a number of EU-co-funded projects developing software tools for terminology and translation applications using text corpora.
Her more recent work deals with text-linguistic aspects of terms in specialised translation and creativity in translation. Editor of two monograph series on translation with Multilingual Matters and Palgrave Macmillan, she is also the founder of the Terminology Network in the Institute for Translation and Interpreting (UK) and a founder member of the Association for Terminology and Lexicography. An experienced PhD supervisor and examiner, she has also taught text analysis, research methods, terminology and technical writing on the MA translation programmes at Surrey as well as a range of undergraduate classes in language, linguistics and translation.
Professor Richard Kiely
Richard Kiely is a Professor of Applied Linguistics and Language Education He has a PhD in language programme evaluation from the University of Warwick; an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex; and a BA in French and English from the National University of Ireland at Cork. His research interests include second language teacher learning, language programme evaluation, and innovation in language teaching contexts.
Previously he has worked in the Centre for International Language Teacher Education (CILTE) at the University of St Mark and St John, in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Bristol, at University College Chichester, and at the University of West London in the UK. He also has extensive experience as a teacher, teacher-trainer and curriculum developer in English as a second language contexts: Poland, Hungary, Mexico, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Zambia.
He has carried out research and supervised PhDs in programme, classroom, and teacher based research themes. He has published in a range of journals (TESOL Quarterly, Language Teacher Research, Modern Languages Journal, ELT Journal, Language Awareness, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching, etc.) and is the author (with Matt Davis and Eunice Wheeler) of Investigating Critical Learning Episodes (2010) and (with Pauline Rea-Dickins) of Programme Evaluation in Language Education (2005).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Mua'ti obtained his first degree from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1985 and then completed his Masters degree in Speech Communication from Western Illinois University, USA in 1988. In 2005, he obtained his PhD in communication in Universiti Malaya. His field of expertise includes Speech Communication, Rhetoric, Political communication and Human Communication. He has also embarked on 6 reserach projects, published more than 11 articles in national and international journals including 11 books and book chapters. To date, he has conducted more than 800 series of in-training sessions for various government agencies, NGOs and private firms in the field of communication, public speaking and politicla rhetoric to name a few. In addition, he was the President of the Pasific and Asia Communication Association (PACA) from January 2009 to December 2011 and a member of the World Communication Association (WCA) since 1999.
